Afterschool Program
Teach My People provides a high quality, academic afterschool program for 204 students at five locations:
Pawleys Island Lower Campus at the Teach My People Center on Waverly Road
Pawleys Island Middle and High at Waccamaw High School
Georgetown Lower Campus at McDonald Elementary School
Georgetown Middle Campus at Georgetown Middle School
Andrews Campus at Andrews Elementary School
Teach My People’s program model is that of a closed enrollment, meaning we bring in ten rising first graders each year and follow them until they graduate high school, and then into college. While Teach My People’s afterschool and summer program have a high priority on academics, we recognize that children from disadvantaged communities need more support beyond academics. Our afterschool program is holistic serving each child’s MIND, BODY and SOUL.
MIND - ACADEMIC PROGRAM
For our first through sixth grades, we “extend the school day” by completing homework, partnering our students with volunteers for individualized tutoring and providing academic enrichment that will support what each student is learning in school.
For our seventh through twelfth grades, we continue to focus on academics through tutoring but also practice soft skills, character development and leadership skills.
Our high school students also focus on college readiness through building their school resumes, increasing GPAs, attending professional SAT/ACT tutoring, and participating in college tours throughout the spring.
BODY - FOOD PROGRAM
With food security being an issue for some families, Teach My People feeds our students a healthy snack each day and dinner each night before they head home. During our summer program, we provide a healthy breakfast and lunch to our students daily.
Last year we started packing to-go meals for our families with younger siblings not yet in our program. We consistently have families take the extra food we give out each night.
We also host a weekly cooking club for interested students that teach fundamental skills in both nutrition and cooking. This helps equip our students with the knowledge and skills needed to better provide for themselves and their families in the kitchen.
“What is one of the most prominent obstacles hindering the child’s learning process? Hunger! Chronic hunger can prevent students from making the most of a formal education, no matter how hard they try to ignore its effects. The sad truth is that hunger can have physical and psychological effects on young people that make learning substantially difficult. Food is the fuel necessary to get through a normal day. Calories in food provide energy to carry out regular day-to-day activities. Without an adequate amount of this energy, students may fall asleep in school or lack the energy to pay attention to an entire day of classes.” - 2014 Borgen Report
SOUL - DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM
Teach My People has 34 staff members (and growing) who consider Teach My People a ministry that reflects Christ’s love to our students. It is a blessing to have a staff that sees their role beyond a job and more as a ministry. In addition, Teach My People teaches 10 student values throughout the year during our weekly Bible study time using our acrostic: RESPECTFUL (See below). These values are not just a great foundation for each student to possess, but give opportunities for our staff to disciple our students on a regular basis.
